Slow Food/Sappington Farmer’s Market; The Good The Big & The Ugly Tomato Contest
Posted by Mac on August 31st, 2010 filed in Food, Parties, Slow FoodComment now »
A few, ok, several weeks ago now, I helped organize a tomato contest held at Sappington Farmer’s Market on Watson. It was a great afternoon, filled with music, fun, drinks and obviously delicious tomatoes… There was a tomato drink making contest between 3 local, awesome bartenders, as well as a good/big/ugly/taste/brix tomato contest
The drink contest was won, not surprisingly by the nationally recognized Ted Kilgore of the now almost famous Taste by Niche. His opponents, Nate from Monarch and Matt from Sanctuaria, hung tight but the close vote ended up leaning towards Ted.
We had 25 entries for the tomato contest. And if my faded memory serves me, there were 25 different varieties of tomatoes entered. We really had no idea what to expect going in. Would we be innundated with hundreds of entries? Would there be any at all? I think it turned out pretty well. Not too much for the judges but enough to give it the feel of a real competition. As for the tomato contest itself, I can only remember 2 of the winners. I know, I know, way to go dude… YellowTreeFarm won for highest brix entry.
And Lola Davis won the overall best tasting tomato for her entry.
It’s All About Lil Nugz These Days..

It really is.
We have got a little nugget growing at our house. His name is Zack but we call him Lil Nugz. And what a cute lil nug he is. Zack will be 3 months old on the 4th of September and so far, he’s managed to pack on about 17lbs and stretch his body to about 26 inches long!! Like Dr. Webb infamously told us throughout the pregnancy, “You aren’t having a midget”, “This kid isn’t going to be a midget.” Thank you Dr. Webb. As of today, Zack is officially wearing clothes built for a 6 month old. For real. We have a trash bag full of clothes that maybe got worn once?.?.?.? I imagine this is just the first of many, “if we had only known” moments.

Berkshire Bacon
Posted by Mac on August 16th, 2010 filed in FoodComment now »
This weekend I smoked 15lbs of Berkshire Bacon that I recently purchased with a group of 5 other people (3 full shares and 2 half shares). And after handing out one of the half shares, we still had about 15lbs of raw pork belly waiting to be cured. I agreed to supervise the bacon making process. It would be the 6th time I’d attempted making my own bacon. I should say, I really enjoy making bacon.

Spotted this cat rolling down Tucker today. I can only hope this isn’t a Red Sox reference and instead refers to something much cooler, like the size of his rims

How To Make An Amphitheater Implode

I am going to use Mr. Miner’s words, since he was there, and I really don’t feel like typing right now. The short version, at their July 4th, 1st leg of Summer Tour 2010 closer, the Phish threw down like only they know how. Here’s how the “moment” went down:
With the opening “Oom Pah Pahs” of “Harpua,” the saga of Jimmy continued for only the second time this go-round. Getting analytical in his narration, Trey began discussing the lies of American History that are taught in schools, and how the real truth of the nation’s history is secretly woven into the lyrics of all Phish songs. The story soon turned to Jimmy’s ancestor who traversed the Atlantic, becoming the first settler of our great land. As the pilgrims soon came over to the New World, and “civilization” began to destroy the pristine landscape, Jimmy’s old relative sat in his house listening to his favorite music from “the only band other than Phish that won’t bullshit you,” imploding the venue with Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing In the Name.” A clear musical jibe at the glorification of our country’s murderous and bloody foundation, Phish chose a perfectly symbolic cover for a nation whose history is mired in hypocrisy; who throughout their past has said “Fuck You, I Won’t Do What You Tell Me” to just about every country and international force in the world. And they also nailed it. In a summer of one-time covers, this ’90s anthem of angst vaulted to the top-shelf as Fishman carried the vocals while the band perfectly mimicked the intense, punk-rock stylings of Zack de la Rocha’s outfit. Coming back around to “Harpua” and closing with break-neck”Weekapaug,” the band wrapped up a classic set that will go down in July 4th legend.

This July 24, IT is happening. Yes IT. A cooperative conglomerate known as THE Art of Food.
If you are unfamiliar, let me explain.
The Art of Food, is a cooperative of local Saint Louis artists and local Saint Louis chefs, joined together by a group of fun loving creative folks volunteering at Slow Food Saint Louis, to create an event unlike any other in the city. We bring local food and local art together in a way that can only be described as orgasmic.
In short, Slow Food, combines the best the city has to offer in terms of chefs and local food sourcing and combines it with the best local artists showcasing their talent for food-like art!! Win, fucking win!!!
If you have never been, I suggest highly that you purchase some tickets.
I know I will.
