Seriously, I can’t make this stuff up…..

So, we made it out of Limon, CO this morning and headed north to Cheyenne, WY. No problems here. Made it thru WY in record time. Nice cruising at 80mph thru the beautiful countryside that is Wyoming. Really, nice easy driving.

Up ahead, Utah. First time in this glorious state myself. Sailing past Salt Lake City and on into the salt flats, where we came upon our first dust storm. I mean, we drove up on this behemoth of a storm, literally, driving into it from the east. You know you’re in a bad way when the only signs you see warn you of the possibilities of high winds. Not that it was the dustiest of dust storms, but the winds were out of control. And soon, so were we. Soon, a sharp whistle, then a loud noise, and then in the rearview mirror, our gear. Yep. The Santa Anna Winds are alive and well in Utah. Blew the friggin cap off the Yakima cargo box, and then almost all of our gear onto the road. Thank god for good samaritan behind us who grabbed our backpacks and chairs while I focused on pulling the Pilot over and getting the duffel bag of shoes and jackets. Amazing. We recovered everything, with only minor scratches. Unreal really. Like a page out of Wild Bill’s handbook. Just 2 days deep, on a leisure travel day, and BOOM, we got action. I was able to secure the loid of the Yakima box back on top. Nothing on the box broke, just came loose (it was hanging by one hinge). Stuffed the gear in the back, locked the top down, and pushed on to West Wendover, NV!!! Yep. Casinos, buffets, and blue hairs. Nice……Hopefully tomorrow is a bit less uneventful.
